Palynotaxonomy of species of Dipteryx Schreb. (Fabaceae – Papilionoideae) occurring in Brazil

The Dipteryx Schreb. (Papilionoideae) genus, whose species are mainly known as "cumaru", comprises economically important tree species that have caught the attention of many countries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pollen morphology of Dipteryx species occurring in Brazil. The pollen material of the species was removed from exsiccates deposited in the herbarium of the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA). The pollen grains were treated with acetolysis, measured, described in terms of size, ambitus, shape, and ornamentation, and, afterward, photomicrographed. It was found that the pollen grains are monads, with size ranging from medium to large, isopolar, with suboblate to prolate-spheroidal shape, subtriangular to triangular, 3-colporate, microreticulate to reticulate exine. Dipteryx species presented pollen grains with few morphological variations, especially regarding exine ornamentation, although differentiation was still possible. Pollen variations made it possible to create a dichotomous key and differentiate the species, thus, pollen morphology of the genus can support future work in the different areas of palynology.
