Abstract

The present paper describes a new occurrence of a species of Balanophoraceae, a root holoparasite, in the Western region of the State of Bahia, Brazil. Helosis cayanensis was collected in the village of “Itaculimim”, a rural area in the municipality of Angical. It is recorded for the first time in the region and in the State. This new occurrence contributes to the increased species diversity in the State and expands the species' range in Brazil. This study also provides morphological information, an identification key for Balanophoraceae genera, and for the Helosis species that occur in Bahia, images, and a map depicting the occurrence of the two species of Helosis in the state.
