Floristic composition of a forest fragment in the Central Atlantic Forest Corridor, South of Bahia, Brazil

The FLORAS Botanical Garden (JBFLORAS) was installed in the Sosígenes Costa campus (CSC) of the Federal University of Southern Bahia and has a remnant of Mata Atlântica. The goal was to characterize a remnant of vegetation of the area from its flora and physiognomy. The plants were collected at fertile stage during the period from 2015 to 2018. A total of 193 species were registered, distributed in 142 genera and 53 families of angiosperms, being Leguminosae (34 spp.), Asteraceae (11 spp.), Malvaceae (10 spp.), Euphorbiaceae (9 spp.), Poaceae and Rubiaceae (8 spp. each) the more diverse. Fifteen endemic species of the Atlantic Forest were found, Cranocarpus mezii Taub. (Leguminosae) being restricted to the south of Bahia and northern Espírito Santo. Four species are threatened with extinction: the Brazilian jacaranda, the jaguar, the brazilwood and the pink cedar. The remnant of the CSC-JBFLORAS is a Dense Ombrophilous Lowland Forest or Tray Forest and has a characteristic flora. It is recommended the conservation of the remnant, due to its floristic peculiarities.
