Abstract

Melastomataceae Juss. comprises approximately 177 genera and 5,750 species. In Brazil, it has about 69 genera and 1,430 species with a tropical and subtropical distribution. The objective of this research was to describe the species of Melastomataceae occurring in the Brejinho das Ametistas district (Caetité/Bahia State) and, thus, contribute to studies for the understanding of Bahia's flora. This work was based on collecting specimens in the study area, as well as analyzing herbarium materials. According to our results, the family is represented by 21 species, distributed in the genera Miconia (12 spp.), Pleroma (2 spp.), and the remaining with only one species each: Cambessedesia, Macairea, Microlicia, Mouriri, Pterolepis, and Rhynchanthera. Identification key, descriptions, comments, and data on the geographical distribution of the species are provided.
