Abstract

Remaking the landscape by the combination of botany and contemporary art is a landmark of Inhotim Institute. By these means, it is possible to originate new ways of thinking about culture and biodiversity. This study shows how the landscape design concepts drove the botanic garden practices, its development and the future challenges. Due to Inhotim’s vivid garden design, a diverse and relevant collection of plants, it was possible to Inhotim be recognized as botanic garden in 2010. Issues related with biodiversity, plant conservation, sustainability and environmental education are also raised from the garden design development. These issues move the institution towards the improvement of its environmental practices; scientific research and conservation of its forest fragments among others. Many challenges are still to come but knowing its own identity and vocation will aloud the institute to improve constantly its sustainable practices, research and concepts.
