Abstract

The essential oil from Xylopia sericea A. St. –Hil. (Annonaceae) fruits from southern Bahia was isolated by hydrodistillation. The chemical composition of the essential oil was examined by GC-MS and resulted in 19 compounds, being identified 98.77% of the oil. The major compounds were α-phelandrene (24.46%), β-phelandrene (14.64%), β-pinene (13.53%), α-pinene (11.33%), myrcene (7.41% ) and o-cymene (6.07%). The compounds present in the essential oil of X. sericea point to a variety of pharmacological actions, potential in the treatment of diseases, and especially as an antimicrobial agent and natural pesticide, avoiding the use of pesticides that increase human and environmental contamination and resistance in several species.
