Abstract

The didactic herbarium of Murilo Braga State School (MBSS) was launched in Itabaiana County, Sergipe State, Brazil, to help overcoming difficulties associated with botany teaching and to better understand the Brazilian flora. The aims of the current study are to expand the collection of MBSS’sdidactic herbarium, to improve knowledge about plant species forming the local flora, to help students to better understand the dynamics of scientific herbaria and to arouse their interest in the botany field. In order to do so, botanical material was collected and dried, species were identified, and exsiccates were assembled and organized at the chemistry and biology laboratory of MBSS. The current research has contributed to the incorporation of 140 species, mostly of herbaceous species native to Brazil. The exsiccate production process carried out by students enabled them to better understand the local flora, favored botany teaching contextualization and helped them to learn botanical concepts.
